Library Closings

Both libraries will be closed Thursday, January 1st  for the New Year's Day holiday and  again on Monday, January 19th to observe Rev. Martin Luther King Day.  No items are marked due on those dates.

Welcome to Libby Edwardson, Bookmobile Librarian

Libby Edwardson states that she is honored to be the new Bookmobile Librarian and is looking forward to serving and getting to know the residents of Bell county. Libby moved to this area 5 years ago from New York. She grew up in Iowa, studied Arts and Theater in Australia and Ireland, and is now proud to call this area home. Since moving here, she has worked with the local Girl Scouts, volunteered at Cooperative Christian Ministry, taught after school drama at the Intermediate school and been involved with the girls mentoring program.

Libby is married and has 4 wild and wonderful daughters - Grace, Hattie, Mabel & Essie. When she isn't busy with all those girls she enjoys singing at First Christian Church, doll making and, of course, reading.

New Web Site for Kentuckians Facing Economic Difficulty

Message from Gov. Steve Beshear to Public Librarians:   "During this time of economic uncertainty, all Kentuckians need to know that state government is on their side.

One way I am demonstrating that commitment is through the creation of a new Web site, assistance.ky.gov – a one-stop shop where many forms of public assistance are available in one easily accessible site.

This Web site provides links to information about programs that can help during these tough economic times. At assistance.ky.gov, you will find help on paying bills, obtaining a job and holding onto your home if or when foreclosure is threatened.

Unfortunately, many of the people who may benefit from the services offered on the Web site may not have Internet access except through their public library. I encourage you to share the assistance.ky.gov Web site with your clientele who may be served by these programs.

Historically, the use of public libraries increases during times of economic downturn. With your help, it is my hope that together we can better assist our citizens and provide them the resources they need to endure these challenging times."

(Librarian's note:  We have posted the link to this web site on our main page, this newsletter page, and our reference links page. )

New Clerk Hired at Middlesboro

Michelle Howard

"I am so excited to be working with the wonderful staff at the Middlesboro Public Library!   I was born and raised in Middlesboro; attended First Baptist Church and was very active in 4-H for many years.

I graduated from Middlesboro High School and attended Lincoln Memorial University for three years before moving to North Carolina and attending Lenoir-Rhyne College for one year. I majored in English and minored in Theatre. My fondest memories of college are of the times I spent with the Dinner Theatre and The Tower House Players!

I have a 16 year old son. He is a Leukemia survivor and my absolute heart and soul. I am proud to say that I have passed on my love for reading to him and that he is working on his second manuscript!  My hobbies are reading, writing, movies, my internet boards and time with my son."

January's selection: The Knitting Circle by Ann Hood

After the sudden loss of her only child, Mary Baxter joins a knitting circle as a way to fill the empty hours and lonely days. The women welcome her, each teaching Mary a new knitting technique and, as they do, reveal their own personal stories of loss, love, and hope.
